where to begin?

Where to begin in talking about our first week in France? How about here? Last night we were extremely grateful guests at a dinner truly worth writing home about. So that's what I'm doing. Writing home about our incredible multi-course culinary experience at one of Nantes' finest restaurants. This was - hmmm - I think it was the fourth course. And yes, the cheese tray was truly a thing of beauty, but it didn't tempt me. Dessert follows cheese in the typical French dinner, and that was what I was waiting for. I was not disappointed. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

FRIDAY
...airport good-bye

Finally it was time to say goodbye. It wasn't easy. But we're always together, really, because it's the heart that truly matters, no question...

THURSDAY
...a pablum-packed day of firsts

Now when it came to choosing a picture for this day, what else could I choose but Jamie's first taste of solid food! We were soooo excited to be there to share the event! And she really seemed to love it, as you can see for yourself. Grandpa got it all on video too. Pablum - who would have thought it could be such a highlight of one's day! We also gave Jamie her Christmas presents today, because she will be all the way around the world in Australia for her first Christmas!!! And I was sooo tempted to put in some pictures from the Butterfly farm - totally amazing! And then our final evening together in the Stone Mill Pub - so wonderful, including my being able to take Jamie out for a little while at the end, walking with her over a little bridge in the twilight. Incredible.

WEDNESDAY
...amelie?

Doesn't this just remind you of the garden gnome that got to travel the world and send snapshots of itself in front of famous places? Adorable! While Josh spent some more time at the conference, the rest of us travelled northwards towards the North York Moors. We saw castle ruins, and the remains of two abbeys, one of which might have been the one mentioned in the James Herriot stories (where Tristan scares people by pretending to be the ghost of a monk). Then we picked Josh up and saw some amazing churches in York, including a cathedral that rivals Notre Dame in Paris. And this was the day that we relaxed in a park by the ruins of yet another old abbey, and Jamie rolled over from back to front to back again, for the very first time! And Josh got it on video!!!

TUESDAY
...a jam-packed all-creatures kind of day!

After dropping Ron and Josh off at the conference, Heather and Jamie and I had an amazing day, jam-packed with wonderful times. There were (as always) so many pictures I could have chosen to represent this day - me pouring tea and eating scones with jam at Betty's place in York, loads of pictures taken at Alf Wight's home and veterinary clinic in Thirsk (James Herriot of All Creatures Great and Small), Heather and Jamie at the Agar Arms pub at twilight... But this picture is particularly precious. A moment in time for Heather and Jamie, and I was blessed to be able to share that memory and capture it on film. And then of course, Josh and Ron returned at the end of the evening, with the wonderful news about Josh's success. What a day!

MONDAY
...dear God, please send a thunderstorm!

And so her wish was granted! Monday was mostly an at-home kind of day. Josh had to go into work to prepare his talk for Tuesday's conference presentation. Ron and I babysat Jamie in the morning (Heather went for a hair"cut"), and then we sat together in the backyard and went for a walk through the park in the afternoon. Such a lovely relaxing time together. And finally, when Josh got home, we all stood together in the kitchen eating pizza and watching a thunderstorm. Jamie sat in her "Bumbo" on the kitchen counter (not eating pizza), thus carrying on the Neufeld tradition into the next generation - the celebration of thunderstorms unto the third and fourth generations of those who love to watch them!

the dawn of a new day

Last time we were in this place was on Jamie's dedication day. It was so good to be there again, standing together in that special place. And we picked such a good Sunday to be there, because Josh played the guitar and helped lead the singing - hearing his voice reminded me of those amazing operettas. (I imagine that right now a few of you reading these words will be thinking back to some special moment or other from Emmanuel days!) This was also our Jane Austen day, the day we visited Stoneleigh Abbey, the day I took that close-up of Jamie in her peach-coloured Winnie-the-Pooh outfit given to her by her Great Grandpa. And the evening and the morning were the third day!

as English as it gets?

Saturday, September 9th. Here we are at an English pub, overlooking a stream/river, having our pint (Ron) and tea (me). The Stone Mill Pub was a wonderful way to end a lovely day filled with more English stuff - castle ruins down the street from Josh and Heather's place, and an old monastery with adjacent cave, complete with history/legend about the Crusades, a hermit, and heartbreak. How English can you get?

one glorious week, day 1

Ron and I are sitting in our tiny little studio apartment in Nantes. But France will just have to wait. First I want to tell you more about the precious time we spent with Josh and Heather and Jamie, and relive that wonderful week with you one day at a time. Day 1 - Friday, September 8th - we held Jamie in our arms once again, and we saw her beautiful smiles for the very first time. Beyond words.

cheeky little Princess!

Just a quick post for now - more to come after we settle in Nantes. But I couldn't resist posting this one of so very many terrific pictures of our beautiful, sweet, funny - and cheeky - little Princess! And to let you know that yesterday we saw Jamie Ruth roll over from back to front to back again - for the first time! It happened on the grass in a lovely park next to the glorious ruins of an old abbey. An incredible backdrop for an incredible moment. AND Josh got it all on video!

what a guy!

Yes, it's true, we have a prize-winning son. The timing of our visit was wonderful, as it made it possible for Ron to attend the conference and hear Josh's terrific presentation and see him receive this award! Meanwhile, Heather and I galavanted around York, having high tea at Betty's place and travelling up to the North York moors. There we walked through Alf Wight's home and veterinary clinic - James Herriot's world! More to come later - don't want to take too much time right now, as this is our last day to spend with the little Princess!

inspiration

Jamie - unbelievable... total delight... joy of our hearts... what else can I say? We just adore this beautiful, sweet little doll. Here she is yesterday enjoying the sunshine on an estate that belonged to Jane Austen's family! We had a wonderful tour, and heard lots of stuff about the inspiration for Jane Austen's novels! It was quite something to think of walking through rooms that Jane Austen had lived in, looking at views and portraits that had inspired her. It reminded me of feelings I had in Israel so many years ago, or in England just a few years ago when Caitlin surprised us by taking us to places where George MacDonald had been! Yes, haven't I been good? This is the first time I've mentioned George MacDonald! Probably not the last...

Grandma and Grandpa's house on the move!

The last time we saw Jamie Ruth, she was 3 weeks old. Now she is 4 months old, the same age that Micah was the first time we saw him, in France. Now we are in England, and the flashbacks to that time with Micah and Meghan are coming fast and furious. Trips here and there, quiet times of fun and games, basking in love and joy and belonging, and treasuring every moment in the hopes of making each moment count, each moment last, each moment be a lasting memory. Here we are on Sunday morning, in front of the church where Jamie was dedicated the last time we were here. Holding Jamie in our hearts always, in our arms for this one precious week!

what it's all about

There just aren't words... thank you Josh and Heather and Jamie for the joy of you!

speaking of birthdays...

Elizabeth had her 2nd birthday in April. Micah will have his 4th birthday in September. Here they are enjoying their birthday gift from Grandma and Grandpa - a house of their very own! Last week Grandpa and Daddy worked for a whole day on this, and sadly, Grandma didn't think of taking a picture of the construction while it was in process! But here is the first professional testing of the "finished" product. Decorative details have already begun to be realised - see Micah and Elizabeth's blog to see the crazy things they've been up to! I hear that Grandma and Grandpa's little house is eventually going to be transformed into a playcastle - can't wait to see it! This whole experience has given us so many sentimental flashbacks to a Christmas many years ago - to a pink house, a workbench, and a wild and wonderful time in our lives. Michaela and Jamie - your turns are next!

memories of an early birthday celebration

...celebrating you, Cara Michelle, with much love and joy!
HAPPY 29TH!

happy birthday, Cara!

Here are some flowers from our garden for you, Cara! These lovely blossoms are courtesy of our neighbour. When he noticed me working in my garden one day this spring, he offered to share some of his abundant perennials with us. Little did I realize that this would mean that he would actually show up one day while we were away from home - not only did he turn the soil and plant the perennials, but he also left an envelope at our front door, containing four pages of handwritten information and instructions about each and every plant (17 varieties)! A few weeks later, we came home to another surprise - he had purchased some annuals for us and planted those in the empty spaces between the baby perennials! What a model of the abundance of blessing that God wants to pour into our lives, and that we are asked to pour into the lives of others: "A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over" (Luke 6:38)!
