Finally, here's a picture of Jon and Cara, taken during their recent visit to Mom and Dad's house (aka Grandma and Grandpa's house). You may have noticed that the picture has been bowdlerized. Anyone (other than Caitlin and Sharon) remember where I got that word from? Anyone want to take a wild guess as to what has been expurgated from the picture? And no, Jon is not holding Michaela over the side of the boat -Michaela was safe and sound at home, watching a movie and playing a game with Grandma.

bowdlerized - my guess is that you were playing balderdash with Caits and Sharon and this is one of the words that came up!
About the picture - I'm pretty certain that it's big bass that jon has just caught...
am i right?

Dr. Google tells me it means to specifically remove certain items. Like removing the dangly dying thing on the left before posting this photo.
O.K. so Meghan and Josh don't remember. Cara, do you remember? Hint to all of you: think back more than ten years (Caitlin and Sharon are not eligible because I already told them).
no idea mom, sorry!
o.k. so here's another hint - G & S
Princess Ida?
You got it, Cara! It's from the song "Towards the empyrean heights" in Princess Ida. Lady Psyche is advising Melissa and Chloe on which authors women should read in their study of classic literature:
"If you'd climb the Helicon,
You should read Anacreon,
Ovid's Metamorphoses,
Likewise Aristophanes,
And the works of Juvenal:
These are worth attention, all;
But, if you will be advised,
You will get them Bowdlerized!"
It was the first I remember coming across that word, and I found the explanation for it to be really interesting. I've just looked up the details, so here they are. The word is derived from a person's name: Thomas Bowdler (1754-1825) who published a censored edition of Shakespeare, in order to make Shakespeare appropriate for children to read.
