happiness is...

A BRAND NEW PUPPY!

Adoption announcement! Ron and I are the proud and delighted parents of an incredibly gorgeous Leonberger puppy - a breed developed in 19th-century Germany (town of Leonberg), a combination of St. Bernard, Landseer Newfoundland, and Great Pyrenees (yes, Puppy will be big - his Daddy weighs in at 130 pounds)! Until just a few days ago, we had not heard of this breed of dog, and we had no plans (o.k. I had dreams and longings) of getting a puppy. Today we are loved by the sweetest little guy imaginable. It's a wonderful story of serendipitous circumstances and of Ron's sacrificial love for me. Care to help us name Puppy? So far the possibilities are Kazan, Kodiak (Kodi for short), Yosi, Ben and Leopold. Would you like to help by voting on one of these names or by suggesting another one? Puppy needs a name - soon!

Yosi is by far the most suitable name for this very Jewish-looking puppy. Heidi and Bea vote for Yosi too (and dogs have a sense for these things, so we should all just trust their instincts).

I personally vote for Leopold. Kodiak is also great. I don't like Yosi (sorry Cait) It just brings back memories of taunting Josh.

If it was my puppy I would name him Walter. I can't imagine that you would choose such a solid practical name though. He is pretty cute and I look forward to meeting him.

I suggest Mc, pronounced, "Mic" because he is a burger (berger).

Yoshi (note spelling) is my vote as it was my favourite Nintendo character. Also a dinosaur!

And no longer would dad call me by that ridiculous name.

Yosi sounds like a name for a small dog - probably why Heidi and Bea like the name so much. Kodiak is much more of a manly name. And Kodi for short sounds so right! Micah and Lizzy are already calling him Kodi. It will be hard to train them out of it. Probably the easiest (and wisest) thing to do is to just call him Kodiak. He does look like the Kodiak bear - don't believe me? Google it!

I am so struggling with this one. I've spent hours on the internet and with a baby name book. And I'm still leaning towards Kazan because it has such strong associations with my childhood - the wonderful, strong, loving, faithful Kazan the Wolfdog (remember finding the book for me, Josh?). When naming our dogs in the past, I've always thought, too bad I can't call her Kazan because it's a boy's name. And now - because we had no choice, we finally have a boy dog. But nobody else seems to like the name Kazan, so it's causing me to hesitate. What if I told people that we could call him Kaz for short (pronounced Kaze)? Would that make people like it better? I like Kodi, but it sounds the same as Cody, which is the 9th most common boy dog's name. And Yosi (or Yoshi) might be nice, seeing as how Josh wouldn't mind, and it reminds me of our amazing time in Israel! But it doesn't exactly sound like a big dog's name, does it? I like the idea of Leopold, but when I think of saying it, it doesn't roll off my tongue easily, and Leo (the easier shortened version) is probably quite a common name for Leonbergers. Thoughts, anyone? By the way, Puppy cried and jumped at the door this morning - and did her business right away when I let her out!!! What a good boy!

Oops, you can see how hard it is for me to adjust to having a boy dog - I just called him "her" several times!

I would like to suggest "Burr"
(rhymes with fur)
as in "Ma, da Burr dun eht da porridge."

(Burr = Bear, as in fuzzy bear)
(Burr = Burr, it's cold 'round here)

Respectfully submitted,
Tom

I think Yosi can go both ways - either for a big dog or for a little dog. It's also a sweet and gentle name, which may help to reduce the amount of intimidation some may feel when meeting a 130lb dog. BUT, my second favorite name is definitely Kazan. Maybe he can have a string of middle names composed of all the other favorites (Kazan Kodi-Yosi-Leo-Walter-Mc-Yoshi-Burr Neufeld)?
OR, you can always go with my newest name suggestion, Zwieback.

I vote:

1. Yosi

2. Kazan

3. Zwiebach

4. Barbara

Admit it, he DOES look like Barbara Streisand. And it's a manly name.

Or we could start calling him Yosi McYoshi. I like the sound of that.

Yup, this pup needs a "big dog" name. I submit Clifford as a suggestion. We could paint in a few red highlights, and I think name of the orginal owner of Clifford was Emily Elizabeth. There are few Elizabeths in the family. Yup, Clifford is the perfect name :-)

Mmmmmm .... berger.

Very cute puppy!

Call him "Aslan" and then you can get the lion/leon thing in there.

OK I admit that's a bit of a stretch, but it's better than Spot.

I actually thought of Aslan, but felt that it was not an easy name to repeat over and over again (the s-l combination is a bit tricky on the tongue). My oh my, but Puppy is getting rambunctious, and between "redirecting" him and praising him for good behaviour, his name is going to be said hundreds of times a day. I've been trying out Kazan today, and I think it is working for me. I love how it captures emotions from my lifelong affection for Kazan the Wolfdog, and how it also reflects the mysterious dark look about his sweet little face.

Go for it mom! Kazan it is! It actually looks really good - the strong K (like Kodiak!)!
I'll be seeing Kazan on Saturday!
Love,
Meghan
